Alexandria Industries’ Fishing For the Cure Breaks Record, Raises $125,000 to Fight Cancer
With an unstoppable determination to find a cure for cancer, a small team of employees from Alexandria Industries — along with massive community support from sponsors, volunteers, and participants — raised $125,000 at its 16th Annual Fishing For the Cure Ice Fishing Challenge event for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Douglas County.
The money provides transportation for cancer patients to medical appointments, lodging for cancer therapies, copay assistance to supplement the cost of treatments and medications, and funding for medical research.
The 2023 Fishing For the Cure Ice Fishing Challenge had record-breaking attendance, including 240 kids 12 years and younger.
The family friendly event offers a fun-filled day of ice fishing for a great cause. This year’s record-breaking attendance of 1,564 participants, including 240 kids 12 years and younger, competed for 100 prizes in two fish categories: the top 50 large fish (walleye, northern) and the top 50 small fish (crappie, perch, sunfish) – by weight and time registered. Fish prizes ranged in value from $50 to $2,500.
“With overwhelming community support and the eagerness of volunteers, this year’s event proves that a small team can make a huge difference in the fight against cancer,” said Tom Schabel, CEO, Alexandria Industries. “Tournament goers say this event is fun for the whole family and a one-of-a-kind experience making a positive impact on peoples’ lives. The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life celebrates cancer survivors, supports those currently fighting cancer, and honors those lost to cancer.
