Scientific Research: From Air Pressure to Candles

Alexandria Industries has long supported the communities in which it lives and
science_fair_students works—through fundraising, donations and volunteering. Our latest activity was allowing employees time away from their normal work duties to serve as judges for the local elementary school science fairs. While the inherent value gained in volunteering is obvious, the fun facts about our science fairs are, well, fun!

This year’s science fair projects were beyond amazing! It was inspiring to learn that one student figured out how far a bike can coast based on different air pressure in its tires, and another learned how quickly common household products would freeze when immersed in liquid nitrogen. Add to this, other students who set their sights on figuring out which kinds of bakeware cooks cookies faster (dark coated, non-stick Teflon), and what brands of candles last the longest. Hint, it’s not Glade, or Febreze.
liquid-nitrogen-symbolScience fairs provide an excellent hands-on approach to teach students how to conduct scientific research. They are little sticklers about keeping the variables constant, tracking and recording data, and measuring the results. The interesting topics chosen and the quality of the research were incredible. But was most impressive was the students’ abilities to present their projects so well. These well-spoken and polished future leaders were extremely interesting. We are excited to know that these science-minded individuals could some day become great customers and future employees of Alexandria Industries.

We are proud to be able to help our communities thrive. Thank you to all our volunteers. We truly appreciate their time and efforts to help in whatever way they can. They are "People Making a Difference!"
