A Hand-Up

Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Since 1997, the Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County (Alexandria, Minn.) has built, repaired, or renovated more than 50 homes, providing decent and affordable housing for more than 200 people.

Habitat homes are a hand-up, not a handout. Homeowner families invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (sweat equity) into building their home and the homes of others. They also purchase their homes at fair market value.

Approximately 60 Alexandria Industries’ employees recently volunteered about 400 total hours to help build two Habitat homes. They hung siding on the home’s exterior and sheetrock inside the home. They also hung trim around the home’s interior doors and walls. The employees felt great about helping two young, single mothers build their homes for them and their children.

Our CEO Tom Schabel, has a dream for our team… one day building an entire Habitat for Humanity home for a family in need of assistance in finding stable housing. Now that we have two home builds under our tool-belts, we hope to help make his dream come true some day soon.

If you would like to participate in a home building project, have questions about the organization, or know of someone who would be a good fit for owning a Habitat home, visit Habitat for Humanity at www.habitat.org.
